The LONI Institute (LI), a new initiative funded by the Louisiana Board of Regents and six member institutions (Louisiana State University, Louisiana Tech University, Tulane University, Southern University, University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and University of New Orleans), invites applications for LONI Institute computational scientists. The LI expects to hire six computational scientists, one at each member institution, beginning in November 2007 with funding for five years and the expectation that successful scientists and the member institutions will find additional funding after this five-year period to continue the positions.
The computational scientists will work with projects selected by the LI to help make the projects, which could be in any area of research (science, engineering, social sciences, arts and humanities), successful. In general, this work will include providing expertise, developing tools and techniques in scientific visualization, efficient parallelization of applications, data formats and I/O methods, grid computing, programming frameworks, optimization, and algorithms. The computational scientists will also prepare and present documentation, tutorials, and workshops to increase the impact of LONI on its member institutions and partners.
At Tulane University, the Computational Scientist will be housed at the Center for Computational Science (http://www.ccs.tulane.edu) and will be expected to emphasize areas of research well represented at Tulane (see CCS website). For more information on the Tulane University site, please write to ccs@tulane.edu.
The LI Computational Scientists will be selected on the basis of
- Potential to support research projects in the disciplines
- Potential to utilize and advance the infrastructure under development across LONI
- Potential to interact with faculty and staff at the member institutions, in industry, and at other institutions to create successful LI projects
- Potential to meet the metrics for success of the LI (http://www.institute.loni.org/metrics.php)
Instructions for applying:
Please send a CV and a cover letter that includes the reason you are applying for this position, and the member institutions at which you would prefer to work, in a single e-mail to ccs@tulane.edu. The six LI member institutions will work together to select the computational scientist candidates, who will then be asked to formally apply for one or more positions through the university HR procedures.
